Insect & Disease Control

New Information! Emerald Ash Borer

Insects are everywhere, at home, the office, and outside. They are also in and on trees.

Although there are many types of insects, not all are detrimental. Some are beneficial, but if your tree catches the wrong bug, it could decline and die. Although not all insects are bad, they can cause your beautiful trees to become disfigured.

Insects are usually identified by three basic types: boring, sucking, and chewing. Chewing and sucking insects usually cause superficial damage while borers feed off of the vascular system of the tree. If the bugs continue to feed off the tree in this manner, the tree will not be able to continually extract nutrients for its food.

Often, insects are only a result of additional underlying problems or the cause for future tree problems. If you believe your trees contain unfriendly bugs, please call an arborist.

Until a few years ago, spraying trees was the only viable method of treating for insects. Many companies still spray. Menchhofer Tree Care does not spray for we believe it to be inefficient as less than 10% of the chemical gets on the tree/insects. The remaining percentage ends up evaporating, drifting, or getting on your yard. We also do not wish to introduce harmful chemicals into our environment. Sprays also only remain active for about 3-5 weeks.

Menchhofer Tree Care uses what is called Micro-Injection. The chemicals are applied into the tree, thus no harmful chemicals enter the environment. Only the insects feeding on the trees are affected. Also, fewer chemicals are used due to the fact only the amount needed for each tree is used.

Around Indianapolis webworms are a major concern as we have had a very large number of these insects during the past few years. Treatment of these bugs needs to be completed in May or early June for best results.

Please inspect your trees on a regular basis and if you suspect insect infestation, please contact us.
